Detectives investigating checks stolen from mailboxes on Big Coppitt Key

Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating three instances that occurred recently in which endorsed checks were stolen from mailboxes on Big Coppitt Key.

There had been no arrests as of Saturday.

In each separate instance, the checks were endorsed by the three victims and placed in a mailbox.

In each instance, the respective banks for each victim contacted them and stated their endorsement appeared to be whited out and another name added, which the banks deemed suspicious and halted the transfers.

In each instance, the dollar amount was changed to a larger amount than what the victim wrote.

In one instance, a check was changed from $31.42 to $1,200. In another instance, a check was forged for $1,000. Another was for $300.

In each instance, the victims notified the Sheriff’s Office.

The checks were stolen from residential mailboxes on Shore Avenue and Dondi Road.

The Sheriff’s Office was first notified on Oct. 14. Two more victims came forward on Nov. 1.
