30-Year Old Field Gets New Turf
The Key West City Commission continued its effort to improve green and recreational space on the island by approving the installation of new artificial turf at the Rosa Hernandez Girls Softball Field on Kennedy Drive.
The unanimous vote during Monday’s special commission meeting means that the girls playing this 30th season on the field will have a modern, mud-free surface to play on.
The City is working to transition to artificial turf for ballfields. They are easier to maintain and provide a better surface for the people using them. This turf is composed of organic material, unlike some types of artificial turf that are made of rubber. That means the fields will be the same temperature as grass ballfields.
The installation of the turf will not cost more than $418,000.
“Time is of the essence,” City Manager Greg Veliz told the commission, “because the season is beginning.
