Burglary Suspect Arrested

A 19 year old Key Largo suspect was arrested after he tried to steal a bicycle from the front porch of a residence Sunday night.

The victim is an officer with Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. At 9:15 p.m. he saw 19 year old John Serrano on the front porch of his residence on Burton Drive in Tavernier, stealing his bicycle. The victim confronted Serrano and threw the bicycle at him before fleeing.

The victim pursued Serrano on foot, catching him a short distance away and holding him until Deputy Titus Hodges arrived on scene and took Serrano into custody.

A search of Serrano’s pockets turned up an unopened can of beer and a credit card and identification belonging to a Tavernier woman. When Deputy Hodges contacted the woman about her items, she said she last saw them in her car after going to Winn Dixie a short time before.

Serrano was transported to jail, charged with burglary, theft, resisting arrest without violence and possession of alcohol by a minor. Once at the jail, corrections deputies found he had marijuana and a glass smoking pipe in his possession. He was further charged with introduction of contraband into a detention facility.
