Author Hallie Ephron To Speak At The Friends Of The Library Series

New York Times best-selling suspense novel author, Hallie Ephron, will grace the podium for the Friends of the Key West Library speaker series on Monday, Feb. 29 at 6:00 p.m. The talk will take place at the Key West Theater, 512 Eaton St. Admission is free and seating is available on a first come first served basis. Doors open at 5:30.

Hallie Ephron writes suspense novels that she describes as one part Alfred Hitchcock, one part Mary Higgins Clark, and one part her own unique and wry take on the world. Her hope is to keep her readers up nights. The author is a three-time finalist for the Mary Higgins Clark Award. Her book Writing and Selling Your Mystery Novel: How to Knock ‘Em Dead with Style was nominated for both Edgar and Anthony awards. She is also an award-winning crime fiction book reviewer for The Boston Globe.

Hallie was born into a family of writers. Her parents, Phoebe and Henry Ephron, started out writing Broadway hits such as Three’s a Family, before moving to Hollywood and signing a seven-year contract to write screenplays for Twentieth Century Fox. They wrote such notable movies as Carousel and Daddy Long Legs. According to Hallie, her mother went into labor with her first child as she typing the last sentences of the script for Look for the Silver Lining.

Her older sisters Nora, Delia, and Amy were all writers, but Hallie didn’t start – or, as she says, “succumb to her genes” – until her fifties.

“I couldn’t get started writing until I got to the point in my life when I no longer cared if people compared my work to that of my sisters’,” said Hallie. “I decided it was okay to try and fail; not okay to fail to try. They’ve been enormously supportive and I often call to ask for advice, particularly about the business side. But honestly, when we get together we do not talk about writing. We talk about food.”

She has made up for lost time, having published 10 novels, several of them New York Times best sellers, in the last 15 years. Ephron’s newest novel is titled Night, Night, Sleep Tight, full of riveting plot twists and set in the tawdry glamour of old Hollywood.
