Here are some highlights:

ITEM B1: Florida Keys historian Tom Hambright will be honored for 30 years of service to the Monroe County Public Library System. He is acclaimed for his extensive knowledge of Key West and Florida Keys history not just in Monroe County but throughout the state. Prior to his service with the library, he served 21 years with the Navy, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Upon his military retirement, he became the curator of the Lighthouse Museum and East Martello, where he expanded his interest in Keys lore and legend.

ITEM C14: Staff is seeking approval of an amendment to a task order with EAC Consulting, Inc., for $42,510 for engineering design and permitting services for the Lake Surprise Estates Roadway and Drainage Improvement Project in Key Largo. This would be the first adaptation to a road project in Monroe County that specifically addresses sea level rise, and is based on 2015 tidal data.

ITEM N2: Staff is seeking approval for a contract with Earth Tech Enterprises, Inc. for $202,384 to remove an existing, ineffective weed barrier system and install a new air curtain system at two canals on Big Pine Key. These are part of the Canal Restoration Demonstration Program, which is evaluating the cost and effectiveness of air curtains as weed barriers. The goal is to prevent seaweed from entering the canals, where it becomes trapped, drops to the bottom and decays, deteriorating the water quality. These are the fourth and fifth of six demonstration canals, and the ones with the worst water quality. They are located between Atlantis and Hollerich drives and between Baileys Lane and Witters Lane in Doctor’s Arm.

ITEM N8: Staff is seeking approval of a resolution to support the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s 2016 legislative budget that requests $13.5 million in funding to address the safety conditions of historic pedestrian bridges along the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail. This includes $3.5 million for restoration of the Bahia Honda State Park scenic overlook.
