IWFFA tourney opens today

The full schedule for 2016 Kelly McGillis Classic International Women and Girls’ Flag Football Championship, beginning with an event this evening at Aqua Nightclub, has been announced by IWFFA President Diane Beruldsen. Other social events, parties, water sports, fundraising activities and more are planned to round out the tournament action for players and fans, she said.

Tuesday begins the first of three flag football clinics held during the daytime at the Wicker Field complex for players. Women and girls nine years old and older can compete in beginners, middle and higher divisions; the girls division serves the eight and under players.

The evenings are filled with a wide variety of social events beginning at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night women and men will arm wrestle at Irish Kevin’s at 211 Duval St. Wednesday evening is the tournament dinner and the infamous “toilet relay race” where teams compete through the streets of Key West, beginning and ending at Shanna Key, 1900 Flagler Ave.

Wednesday introduces an entirely new event: So You Think You Can Act? Let Kelly McGillis direct you and our panel of judges decide,” 6 till 8 p.m. at the Marriot Beachside, Beruldsen announced. “Participants, female and male, can choose one of four possible scenes, from A Streetcar Named Desire, Gone with the Wind, Thelma and Louse or Fried Green Tomatoes,” she said. “There is no rehearsal; it’s on the spot acting.” Pre-registration is required and is free; contact Beruldsen by Tuesday at (305) 896-8678.

On Thursday noon to 4 p.m., weather permitting, there will be a tournament pool party at the Bourbon Street Complex at 724 Duval. Official opening ceremonies are 7:30 p.m. at the complex and registration will be open there from 7:30 till 11 p.m.

Tournament games will be held at Wickers Field (14th and Flagler) from 10 a.m. till 5:30 p.m. on Friday, 9-4 on Saturday and 9-6 on Sunday, followed by women’s divisions award presentations at approximately 6:30 p.m. at Turtle Kraals Restaurant.

As well as cheering their favorite teams, spectators are invited to participate in the daily half-time games at the field which include wheel barrel races, bed races, tug a war and tandum bicycle races sponsored by Moped Hospital as well as traditional kick, pass and punt contests. All winners will receive prizes.

Friday night parties will be wine, cheese and sexy games at Fairvilla at 524 Front St., then across the street for Island Dogs Sexy Dance competition.

Saturday night provides entertainment for the young athletes at Ripley’s Believe it or Not at 108 Duval and Angelinis Pizza, 208 Duval, while the women compete in the annual Ms IWFFA-Key West contest at Fat Tuesday at 305 Duval. Key Westers and visitors are invited to all these events and games. There are no admission fees.
