Monroe County Firefighters go pink during October

to support breast cancer awareness

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Monroe County Fire Rescue along with IAFF Local 3909 are partnering together to help raise awareness of the disease.  IAFF Local 3909 is distributing “Florida Firefighters Care Enough to Wear Pink” tee shirts to all MCFR personnel.  “You may see some pink firefighters around the County this month” said Fire Chief Jim Callahan. “We are supporting cancer awareness of all types and want to remind citizens that early detection can make a huge difference in treatment options and potentially save lives, so it is important to keep up with those medical screenings” he said.  According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States (other than skin cancer).  Millions of women are surviving the disease thanks in part to early detection and improvements in treatment.  Each year in the United States, more than 200,000 women get breast cancer and more than 40,000 women die from the disease.  For more information, visit the CDC website at: http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/dcpc/resources/features/breastcancerawareness/
