host free Ready, Set, COLLEGE! workshop

The college application process can be an unfamiliar sea of deadlines, decisions and financial forms that can be both intimidating and overwhelming.

The Key West Chamber of Commerce and Florida Keys Community College have once again partnered to help local families chart a course to a college degree.

The Chamber’s Education Committee and FKCC will present Ready, Set, COLLEGE! a free, hands-on college application workshop at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14 at the FKCC Key West campus. Co-sponsored by CH2M/OMI.

Ready, Set, COLLEGE! is designed to help students apply to college, and help parents pay for it. The program will also offer tips and training for teachers and guidance counselors who play a crucial role in the application, essay and scholarship process. All high school juniors and seniors, parents, teachers and guidance counselors are invited to attend Ready, Set, COLLEGE!

At 5:30 p.m., two full-time English professors will host a writing workshop to help students draft an effective essay.

At 6:30 p.m., a financial aid specialist will discuss the federal financial aid application process. The college library will be set up with 20 computer stations, where students can set up their online FAFSA account and get their login information and PIN that will be used throughout their college career.

Information about local scholarship opportunities and criteria will be provided, and experts will offer insight and advice about letters of recommendation and other college application materials.

The free program begins at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Florida Keys Community College Key West campus.
