If I still lived on the island if Key West, and if I could nominate anyone for the Athena TM award, it would certainly be Connie Gilbert, who despite being supposedly retired as so many of us second-career women are, has worked ceaselessly for the betterment of her fellow women, wherever and whomever they are. As a lifelong member and leader of NOW, I’ve seen Connie plaster her little car with signs and slogans and drive in the holiday parade as the lone supporter and promoter of the organization. It’s often been frustrating trying to enjoy a meal with Connie in a restaurant or elsewhere because everywhere women are reaching out to her for help in their daily struggles for a better quality of life, work environment and earnings that will give them the kind of lives they were trying to achieve. Connie doesn’t always have a ready answer or solution to their problems but she’ll darn sure try to help them and if someone needs a speaker to motivate their group, Connie never seems too busy to schedule the days with them. C.S.Gilbert is a one-woman powerhouse and I hope someone in Key West will nominate her for Athena.
