Marathon Mayor Chris Bull today officially filed his resignation from City Council effective after his last meeting of his term as Mayor, October 27th. His wife Cindy and he have a contract to buy Hendersonville Sports Club in Hendersonville, NC.

“Cindy and I are extremely happy to announce that we are embarking on the next new chapter of our lives. As of October 9, we are purchasing the Hendersonville Sports Club in Hendersonville, NC and our family will be moving at the end of this school year. The Hendersonville Sports Club (HSC) is a special opportunity for us to work together doing what we love to do and build another legacy for our family.”

“It is going to be hard to say goodbye to all the friends we have made, kids we have coached, and people we have gotten to know during the last 16 years. Marathon will always have a special place in our hearts.”

Currently, HSC has 6 clay tennis courts, 4 racquetball courts, 2 indoor tennis courts, an indoor soccer field, 2 soon-to-be pickleball courts, swimming pool, and a fitness center.

The Bull’s have had a long history of providing sports programming while living in Marathon and even before moving here. Bull is currently President of the Florida Keys Soccer Club and Head Coach of the Marathon High School Varsity Tennis Team. He also served over ten years as AYSO Soccer Regional Coordinator, Marathon Youth Club President, USPTA Tennis Pro at Wonderlin Tennis and coached numerous soccer teams and tennis players. He has been awarded the Jaycees Community Service Award and was USPTA District Pro of the Year. Cindy coaches the MHS Girls Soccer team, who has won three straight District titles, and the MHS Tennis Team. She has coached numerous AYSO soccer teams, organized adult tennis leagues and run a USTA Ralleyball program. Lindsay (11) is on Florida Keys Soccer Club travel teams and plays in USTA sanctioned tennis tournaments around Florida.

“This was a totally unexpected move. Through a strange twist of fate in August, we discovered this opportunity. In late August I did a site visit and fell in love with the area and the property. It was something we hadn’t planned for, but couldn’t pass up.”

There are several Marathonians who have moved into the same area of western North Carolina. Bill and Jane Daniels retired there and Bull’s mom Dottie Mattern and her husband John live 15 minutes away from the Club.

Mayor Bull plans to put the discussion of his replacement for the one year left on his term on the City Council meeting agenda on October 13th. His recommendation will be to have the third place finisher in the November 3rd election be the person selected by the remaining four Councilmembers on November 10th to fill the one year left of Mayor Bull’s term.
