Public Montessori School hosts One Human Race 5K

Key West runners and walkers take note:  the public Montessori charter school is hosting its fifth annual One Human Race on Saturday, October 3rd from 8:00am-11:00am.  The 5k stretches flat and fast out and back along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and helps support free public Montessori education in Key West.

The family-friendly event begins and ends at Higgs Beach Park beside Salute restaurant and includes t-shirts for the first 150 entrants, a ½ mile “Fun Run” on the White Street pier and post-race activities for children nine and under, keepsake medals, healthy post-race snacks, and an assortment of raffle prizes generously donated by local business sponsors.

Florida’s charter schools – innovative schools of choice made available to students through a lottery system – are publicly funded, but at a lower rate than traditional district schools. As a tuition-free, K-8 public charter school, the Key West Montessori Charter School relies on fundraising efforts throughout the year to cover the costs associated with providing public Montessori programming. Proceeds from the One Human Race 5K assist in the school’s efforts to provide Montessori education for free, while also promoting physical fitness.

“Many of our students and their families have been training and are looking forward to celebrating their accomplishment of walking or running three miles,” says Principal Lynn Barras.

Though a school-organized event, they encourage the greater community’s participation.

“It takes the support of our island community to make this event successful,” says Barras.  “We are very thankful to have so many volunteers as well as local business sponsors who help promote the One Human Race 5K and Fun Run.”

Register online at Southernmostrunners.com— entry fee is $20 for adults ($25 day of the race) and $10 for children under 18.  Check-in begins at 7:15; Packet pick-up & registration is Friday, Oct. 2, 2015 5:00-7:00 pm at the race site.
