Celebrate Constitution Day at FKCC

KEY WEST, FL, September 9, 2015—Florida Keys Community College invites the community to celebrate Constitution Day with students, faculty and staff on Thursday, September 17 from 11:00a.m. to 12:30p.m. in the library on the Key West Campus.  Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787, laying the foundation of our government.

Coordinated by FKCC Business Law instructor and attorney Stephen Muffler, Constitution Day activities aim to educate participants on their rights under the Constitutional Amendments and to encourage habits of being a good citizen.  The event will feature presentations by Chief Assistant Public Defender Patricia Docherty-Gibson and by Monroe County Court Judge Wayne Miller.

“It is the common thread woven into the fabric of our country, embraced by all Americans regardless of their political affiliations, economic class, religious beliefs or national origins,” said Muffler.  “Although it has only 4,440 words, it is the oldest and shortest written constitution of any major government in the world and used by over 100 countries when drafting their own constitutions.”

Following the program, attendees will enjoy a free lunch provided by the Monroe County Bar Association.  Each will get a free pocket Constitution donated by the City of Key West’s Citizens Review Board.  Attendees will also learn how to register to vote with the help of representatives from the League of Women Voters.
