Out of the Darkness Walk for Suicide Prevention

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has organized the 1st Annual Out of the Darkness Walk for Suicide Awareness and Prevention. It will be held on Thursday, September 10th. The walk will begin at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department located at 5501 College Road. Sign-in and registration will begin at 5:00 PM, the program will start at 5:45 and the walk will commence at 6:30. It is a 3-mile walk around the College Road loop.

FREE transportation to and from the walk is being provided by Old Town Trolleys at the locations shown on the attached map. Trolley #1 will make its first pick up at 5:00 at the Angela Street Depot at Duval, its 2nd stop will be at the Wildlife Center at 1801 White Street and the final stop in front of the Key West High School at 2100 Flagler Ave. Trolley #2 will follow the same route starting at 5:30.

The program will feature a welcome from Sheriff Rick Ramsay, and short speeches from City Commissioner Teri Johnston, County Commissioner Heather Carruthers, and a representative from Carlos Curbelo’s office. Our featured speaker is State Representative Holly Raschein. Local pastor, Gilbert Font will bless the walk and lead the walkers in prayer. Jodyrae Campbell will lead the walk’s opening song, “Amazing Grace”.

Monroe County has the highest rate of suicide of all 67 counties in Florida. In light of the several recent suicides in the lower keys, AFSP hopes that this event will be the start of a healing time for the community.
