I couldn’t agree more with your report on Portugal’s pragmatic and adult approach to drug use and abuse. While other nations on the planet are coming around to recognize the abject failure of the “war on drugs” and are looking for intelligent methods of decreasing the negative side-effects that criminalization has created, the US is still mindlessly and hopelessly stuck in the past. The US continues to believe its own propaganda that if you declare war on something, anything, all will be well and the mission will be accomplished forthwith…As usual, belief trumps logic and reality in the homeland. Thank you for this little bit of a reality check.
When are we going to get it? Everything in America is about the money. The reason why there is a war on drugs is because corporate America and the government are not the drug dealers. They’re not the ones making all the cash so it’s therefor illegal. Oh, they’d love to be but the politics prohibits them from being so. Watch Colorado’s experiment closely and you’ll quickly see my point. Government and business change their tunes when cash starts filling their coffers. American politics has holier-than-thou attitudes when it comes to drug use (not necessarily drug ABUSE) and gay marriage because there’s no money in it for them. On the other hand, their selective morals allow and fail to restrict the trillion dollar pornography industry that any 12 year old can access freely on the Internet. I won’t even talk about what the government has allowed banks, Wall Street, and insurance companies have stolen from us without penalty. It’s all about the Mooooooney.
