The Florida Keys Council of the Arts is proud to announce that two Monroe County artists have been named as recipients of the prestigious 2014 South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Artists Fellowships. Jon McIntosh of Key West and represented by Lucky Street Gallery is a Collage/Mixed Media artist, and Anja M. Marais, also of Key West and a fine art photographer were recently selected to receive this esteemed, five-county artist fellowship. McIntosh and Marais will each receive an award of $7,500 and be included in an exhibit this Spring featuring all winners from the five counties. This year’s selection is from a record-breaking group of more than 310 applicants. In total, 13 fellowships were awarded in the five-county area – Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Martin counties.

The recipients were selected during a two-tier panel process which included the participation of regional and national arts experts. The 2014 regional panel, whose selections are conducted anonymously and based solely on the evaluation of the artists’ work as evidenced by samples submitted, included: Adler Guerrier, 2013 SFCC Fellowship Recipient (Miami-Dade); Maria Elena Ortiz, Curatorial Assistant, Perez Art Museum Miami (Miami-Dade); Marisa Pascucci, Curator of 29th Century & Contemporary Art, Boca Museum of Art (Palm Beach);Jane Hart, Curator, Art and Culture Center of Hollywood (Broward); Christina Pettersson, 2012 SFCC Fellowship recipient, (Broward); and Amanda Sanfilippo, Curator/Director of Development, Locust Projects (Miami-Dade).

 

Jon McIntosh has worked in and studied art his entire life, graduating from Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in painting, with a focus on contemporary art. He is a multi-award winning commercial artist, has been a children’s book illustrator, co-authored a comic strip, creates political cartoons and is the owner of McIntosh Ink, Inc. Jon’s more recent work encompasses painting, works on paper and constructions.

 

Multidisciplinary artist Anja Marais moved to Key West in the nineties after graduating with a B.F.A, Honours from the University of South Africa in Pretoria. Her work has since been included in solo and group exhibitions internationally. Marais has held residencies in Japan, including a Mino Paper Art Residency where she studied ancient techniques from Master paper makers; the Seoul Art Space Geumcheon Residency in Korea; Kronstadt Art Residency in St. Petersburg, Russia and the Arteles Art Residency, Finland. She has been selected and participated in various, esteemed programs such as the Enrique Martinez Celaya Summer Workshop (in affiliation with the Anderson Ranch Art Center) and the Creative Capital Professional Development Program.
