Aurora Phoenix, the daughter of Rock Solomon and Michele Muse, of Key West, just passed her 2-month birthday and has moved from NICU Level III to Level I NICU.

In his latest communication, her father sounded optimistic as the infant gets bigger and stronger. Born under a pound, she has grown to 3 pounds, 3 ounces.

“She tip-toed around so many perils and has been beating the odds one at a time,” wrote Solomon. “She is now eating a hearty does of mother milk (albeit still pumped into her stomach) and she has been brought down to smaller and smaller breathing machines, almost breathing on her own.”

He said that his daughter has had no problems from her heart surgery and that brain scans have been positive.

Solomon says the doctors have started talking about when she might be ready to go home. Aurora has been in a Miami hospital since shortly birth and her parents have had to take the expensive decision to live temporarily in Miami. “If she keeps doing so good,” wrote Solomon, “they say she’ll be home before Christmas.”

Even after she does go home, the infant will be required to make frequent hospital visits, have specialist doctor visits and have regular home nurses checking in on her, said Solomon.

Aurora Phoenix and her identical twin, Aria, were born on Aug. 18, more than three months premature after a sudden onset of TTTS. Their mom was air lifted to Miami but Aria had already died, and an emergency surgery had to be performed to save her sister.

Aurora Phoenix’s family have had tremendous bills to take care of this emergency. To contribute to a fund helping them, see GoFundMe.com.
