The Key West Pub

By Diane Johnson

Home of the best sliders in town, the Key West Pub is my new home away from home.

We started with an order of the Lobster salad and Cuban sliders. The Cuban slider was by far the best I’ve ever tasted. The house made roast pork was infused with mojo prior to being cooked. When combined with the fresh turkey, ham, melted cheese and pickle the taste was so satisfying, it made me sigh. The Maine lobster salad sliders were piled high with lobster, lettuce and tomato. We also enjoyed crispy tater tots, and crunchy homemade coleslaw. The key lime pie was an absolutely delicious combination of light and creamy, and finished with a mouth watering secret topping.

The Pub has 10 different sliders: Blue cheese infused burger, hickory burger with bacon, caramelized onions and homemade BBQ sauce, all American burger, Reuben, fried conch, fresh fish, vegetarian, homemade chicken salad, Lobster salad and the Cuban. The wings are: Buffalo, Sriracha Hot, Sweet chili, Honey BBQ, Garlic Parmesan, BBQ, Cuban Mojo, Key West Naked with Ranch or homemade blue cheese.

A new dinner menu is in the works featuring fresh fish made three ways: Fried, blackened and grilled. Other items include: A lobster mac’n cheese, chicken fricassee, and chicken or shrimp Alfredo. The salads are: A Greens salad with mixed greens, green apple, cranberries, candied pecans and Asaigo cheese; a Conch salad with fresh Bahamian conch, a Chef’s salad or a Caesar.

Chef Nathan Steinberg and owner Stephen Pointer both share a passion for food. As Pointer says, the Pub is an extension of my kitchen, where the food is lovingly made from scratch. The restaurant is comfortable with a homey vibe that invites you to linger. Owners Pointer and Paul Brian named this cozy spot a pub because the name easily rolls off your tongue. “Meet me at the Pub” is the new catch phrase for all of us lucky enough to have discovered this local watering hole. Pointer and his staff are fully invested in the Key West community. They are generous with their time and support of AIDS Help and other local non-profits.

Happy Hour is every day from 4-7, where well drinks are $3 and beers start at $2. Happy Hour is also where selected appetizers are ½ price including their amazing hamburger sliders. Every Wednesday the Pub invites all the local bartenders to bring it on and share their best recipes at Happy Hour. Prices are reasonable, and you can fill up your belly for only $11 or two can eat for $25. In September, every week is a price rollback to another decade starting with the 1970s. The Pub is also the place for live music and dancing. Each week in September when prices are rolled back, you’ll hear those songs from the ‘70s to the current day.
