Key West has in the bag distinctions for hosting one of the country’s trashiest spring break parties and being home to one of America’s best main drags in Duval Street.

Add to those honors holding the No. 10 spot in Conde Nast Traveler’s “10 Best Small Cities in America.”

Conde Nast Traveler writer David Jeffrys notes that, “Though its bohemian vibe has been somewhat tamed in recent years…the Southernmost City in the continental U.S. still retains the distinctly unique flavor of its original 19th century immigrant population of Conchs.”

He also gives a nod to one of Key West’s iconic figures, Nobel Laureate Ernest Hemingway, whose former Whitehead Street home is a popular tourist draw.

“Where else does a museum house tour include the presence of more than 60 descendants of its owners’ multi-toed (polydactyl) cats?” Jeffrys asks.

The rankings were based on Conde Nast’s 2013 Readers’ Choice Awards.

With a population of around 25,000, Key West falls toward the middle of the pack when compared to other list-making destinations.

Rounding out the top 10 in ascending order are: Sedona, Ariz., population 10,000; Aspen, Colo., population 6,750; Jackson Hole, Wyo., population 10,000; Santa Barbara, Calif., population 91,000; Newport, R.I., population 25,000; Telluride, Colo., population 2,500; Napa, Calif., population 77,000; Caramel-by-the-Sea, Calif., population 3,775; and Santa Fe, N.M., population 68,000.

The trashy spring break title was given by online CoEd Magazine, while Fodor’s recognized Duval Street.
