“If we let the body speak, what story will it tell?” With this simple question Katharine Doughty, artist/dancer/massage therapist, announced her new therapeutic dance workshop on Tuesdays.

“We’ll be utilizing improvisational movement and body awareness exercises as pathways to our body’s intrinsic healing wisdom,” Doughty said. “We’ll learn to let movement serve as a method of inquiry and integrate dance into our individual wellness paths.”

The workshops, which will run through Aug. 26, will be held 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the fellowship room at Unity of the Keys, 1011 Virginia St., at the corner of Watson, Key West.

After the workshop will be an optional brown bag lunch and conversation till 2 p.m.

Open to adults of all ages and ability levels, the workshops invite participants to move at their own pace, Doughty said, adding that no movement experience is necessary and floor exercises can also be done while sitting in a chair. “Just please wear loose, comfortable clothes, bring a water bottle, journal, yoga mat or blanket if you need one for the floor.”

A suggested love offering of $20 per workshop is requested but the sessions are open to all regardless of financial status, she said. Drop-ins are also welcome.

A Key West resident since 2003, Doughty is a licensed massage therapist, modern dancer and artist. Trained in numerous movement techniques and challenged by traditional class and performance structures, she gravitated to including Contact Improvisation, ecstatic dance, Japanese Butoh, Authentic Movement and Mixed Ability Dance, most recently improvisational practices working with improvisation technique innovator Anna Halprin, according to event publicity. She combines her experience in the world dance community with a deep commitment to spirit and healing and offers it “to all who want to move.”

However, she added a caveat: “This offering is not intended as a substitute for professional mental and/or physical care. Check with your doctor before participating in any physical exercise.”
