Committing five errors on top of the four committed on Friday night, the Key West High baseball team saw its seven-game winning streak ended on Saturday night as Merritt High defeated the Conchs, 8-3.

The Conchs (15-3) started fast, scoring three runs in the second inning on a walk, singles by Darren Miller and Chris Varela and a throwing error by Merritt pitcher Ryan Lange.

The Mustangs got one back in the third, another in the fifth, both around Conch errors, then exploded for six runs in the sixth, again around a Key West miscue. Only one of the eight runs was earned as starter Brandon Presley (4-2) took the loss. Steve Wells and Hunter Sellers followed Presley to the mound.

Andy Perez and Varela each had two hits for Key West, while Miller, Sellers and Anthony Henriquez had one apiece.

Presley will be the starter again on Thursday, when Key West opens play in the Chattanooga, Tenn., tournament. The Conchs will face Cleveland, Tenn., in the 7:15 p.m. opener and follow that with a 5:45 p.m., Friday game against Clarksville, Tenn., a 9 a.m., Saturday contest against the host Central team and a 3:45 p.m. Saturday game against Murray County.
