Bill to save homeowners flood insurance goes to President

Local homeowners are a step closer to breathing a sigh of relief when looking at their flood insurance bills, now that both the House and Senate have passed the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act.

“This affects every homeowner in Key West,” said City Manager Bob Vitas. “It’s a huge issue. With this blessing by Congress, the much-needed relief that our homeowners need is on the way. We’re really happy that Congress was listening.”

The bill now goes to President Obama for his signature before becoming law.

City officials have been working closely with lobbyists and elected officials to see this legislation passed. Proposed flood insurance rate increases by the Federal Emergency Management Agency had the potential to drive people from their homes.

“There are so many diligent people who have contributed to the attention this issue has received,” said Vitas, from the grass roots membership of FIRM to the chambers of commerce and individual property owners.

“This will affect each homeowner different,” he said, “and we need to continue to pay close attention.”
