Isle of Bones ‘Bones: Jazz Trombone Concert Jan. 8
One Island Family, the Unitarian Universalist Church at Georgia and Petronia streets, will be the scene of the ninth annual concert given by the Isle of Bones ‘Bones, Key West’s trombone and rhythm jazz group, on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m.
The group, a versatile and hard-swinging septet, stars Joe Dallas, Sr., by reputation the top jazz trombone player around Pittsburgh. Joe is here in town also as a featured performer in the Paradise Big Band concert on January 12. His son, Joe Dallas, Jr., leader of the Paradise band, and Harry Schroeder, also slated as a soloist at that concert, are the other two trombonists in the group; since all the island’s good bass trombonists have left town, the parts for that instrument will be played by the baritone sax player, Georges Hemund, which gives the group an extra outstanding soloist. The rhythm section will consist of guitarist par excellence Michael Gillis, Bubba Lownotes Barton on bass and Key West’s best-known drummer, Skipper Kripitz.
The Bones ‘Bones play tightly harmonized arrangements by Schroeder, the veteran arranger of many local concerts and one of the few musicians writing arrangements on the island. The music choices are wide ranging: swing tunes, bebop standards, blues, familiar bossa novas, rock tunes, and originals. They are all written specifically for this group, to express the sounds of the individual players and of the ensemble as a whole.
Tickets, at the door, are $20.
