32nd Key West Literary Seminar explores ‘The Dark Side’ Jan. 9-19

 By KONK Life News

Gillian Flynn, Carl Hiaasen, Lee Child, Michael Connelly and Sara Paretsky are among the writers who will be headlining the 32nd annual Key West Literary Seminar, “The Dark Side: Mystery, Crime, and the Literary Thriller.” This year’s series of events completes two years of planning and includes two sold-out weekend seminars — nicknamed “Chapter One” (Jan. 9-12) and “The Final Chapter” (Jan. 16-19) — and 11 writers’ workshops (January 16-19).

The public is invited to attend free sessions on Jan. 12 and 19, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the San Carlos Institute, 516 Duval St. Seating is first-come, first-served. Doors will open at 1:45 p.m. The schedule for these sessions is online at kwls.org/seminar32/free-sessions/.

Since its founding in the early 1980s, the seminar has gained international fame as one of the leading literary events in the United States. Readers from all over the world attend the yearly gathering — with its trademark blend of literary conversations, lectures, and parties—to explore a unique literary topic under the guidance of some of the most acclaimed writers in the English-speaking world. It has been praised in the pages of the New York Times and Travel + Leisure, broadcast on television by C-SPAN and has even been parodied in the New Yorker magazine.

To a city whose extraordinary literary legacy includes such heavyweights as Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams, KWLS has added hundreds of important contemporary figures. The organization also works to support new voices in American literature and to build a stronger literary culture nationwide. Teachers, librarians, students and emerging writers from around the country compete for their annual awards and scholarships, while a growing online audio archive features presentations from the past seminars at no charge.
