T’Was the Night Before

By Trinidad Joe

T’was the night before New Year’s And all through the party, Everyone was dancing Happy and jolly. * Our minds were not filled With worry or care, We could all be a little naughty ‘Cause Santa had already been here. * Mistletoe was hung all over the place, So couples could be lip to lip As they played kissy-face. * We danced and sang “To Auld Lang Syne”, We sang it each hour ‘Cause we liked the rhyme. * We sang it at nine And again at ten, Then at eleven We sang it again. * As the witching hour approached Yes, the same one that Cinderella did fear, We huddled up close And held each other near. * “It’s almost that time!” Someone did shout, We all checked our watches So there’ll be no doubt. * “Ten seconds,” said one voice “Nine!” answered another, We all held each other Like long-lost brother and sister. * “Eight!” said one man Then, “Seven!” was heard, In between those shouts No one said a word. * “Six!” screamed a voice All filled with glee, I couldn’t tell If it was a he or a she. * “Five!” “Yes, it’s five!” Someone echoed in, I was so excited That my head started to spin. * I called out next Yes, I shouted “Four!” There wasn’t much time left There was almost no more. * “Three!” said a lady And we all mumbled “Three!” We all felt so good This was easy to see. * “Two!” said a child Who could she be? She should really be in bed At this hour, you see. * “One!” said the host He did it loud and clear, He did it that way So everyone would hear. * No numbers were left We could barely stand it, The old year was over There was no time left in it. * At the stroke of midnight All you could hear, Was our voices raised in unison Shouting, “HAPPY NEW YEAR!”
