Happy New Year

By League of Women Voters of the Lower Keys

The Lower Keys League Board members have been busy preparing for the coming year. We are planning a forum on February 1st, a General Membership meeting on February 22nd, a second forum at the end of March, and Fifth Tuesday gatherings April 29th, July 29th, and September 30th. So be sure to mark your calendars and watch for details in our upcoming League Updates and on our League website where you can always find our online calendar.

Affordable Care Act Forum, Just the Facts

Saturday, February 1st, 10:00 – noon, Eco Discovery Center, Key West

While implementation of the Affordable Care Act is constantly in the news, we thought you would like an opportunity to get your questions answered about implementation with a focus on Florida and the Keys. You will hear an overview of Florida health care from a Florida Blue representative and details on signing up for health insurance coverage from the Florida Keys navigator. Both are highly qualified to discuss issues important to you.

Annual General Membership Meeting

February 22nd, 10:00 to noon, Pasta Garden, Key West

As you may recall, we officially became a Member-At-Large Unit of the Florida League of Women Voters last February. Since then, our membership has about tripled and we have adopted vision and mission statements. You can read those statements on our website. Our goal is to achieve full local League status in 2014. To do that we must adopt bylaws, a financial plan, a membership growth plan, and a program plan. We will be presenting those documents for your review and adoption at our Annual General Membership Meeting. We will also be electing officers and Board members. For those who are interested, a full breakfast buffet will be available to our members for $5 per person. Please rsvp on our website so we can let the restaurant know how many to expect.

Thanks Everyone

I want to end the year by thanking our Board members for all their time and effort in making our Lower Keys League successful. They are Joy Brown Taylor, Vice President; Diane Johnson, Secretary; Sandra Bergin, Treasurer; Jane Newhagen, Membership Chair; Constance Gilbert, Publicity Chair; and Linda Cunningham, Board Member-At-Large. I also want to recognize the generosity of several local businesses who provided complimentary space and food for our events this year. Thanks to the Pasta Garden of Key West located in Duval Square, Mattheessen’s Ice Cream Parlor located on White Street, and Shanna Key Irish Pub located on Flagler Avenue. Please demonstrate your appreciation of these businesses by giving them your patronage. Finally, thanks to every member who attended one of our events. Your presence and participation were vital to the success of our activities.

We hope you will include getting involved in the Lower Keys League as one of your New Years resolutions. You can join the League on our website. We look forward to seeing you at one of our events in 2014.

In League,

Joan Wallin, President
