Fdot Updates Key West Lower Keys Projects, Holiday Vacation Extent Until Jan. 4 or Jan. 6

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has issued its project updates for the week of Dec. 30, according to FDOT spokesman Dean Walters, who headed his report with the warning that “All work schedules are subject to change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.” No work is scheduled to resume until Jan. 6.

The North Roosevelt Boulevard reconstruction project, on day 614 of 820 scheduled, is 74.9 percent complete. However, “The final shift of traffic from the business side to the water side of North Roosevelt Boulevard from Kennedy Drive to the triangle has been delayed until after the first of the year,” and construction work will not resume until January 6, Walters reported. There is no night work scheduled.

He repeated a previously published urgent caution: “There have been numerous close calls recently between bicycles and cars entering and exiting driveways along North Roosevelt Blvd. PLEASE BE AWARE! Drivers please watch for bicyclists and pedestrians, and bicyclists and pedestrians please be aware that drivers may not see you about to cross their path.”

Bahia Honda bridge repair (MM 35.5 to 36.6) is on day #224 of 560 scheduled; with one year to go, the project is 40 percent complete. No work was scheduled from Dec. 21 through January 4. “The public is welcome to fish in the area. However, they are asked not to use the driveway or staging area for fishing,” Walters reported, adding that neither night work nor lane closures were scheduled.

Work on the Saddlebunch Keys (MM 11.3 to 14.6 and MM 15.2 to 15.9), the Ramrod to Big Pine Key resurfacing and shoulder widening (mm 27.4 to 29.5) and the Ohio-Missouri Channel Bridge repair (MM 39.1 to 39.4) also will not resume until Jan. 6.

Those traveling up the Keys are advised that an automobile accident on Dec. 3 at about Mile Marker 63 caused some damage to the Long Key Bridge, affecting the Grassy Key to Layton resurfacing and shoulder widening project, which was expected to be complete in Dec. 2013. “Until repairs are completed, FDOT has reduced the speed limit to 25 MPH for 2,000 feet on either side of the accident site. Speed will be reduced in 10 MPH increments from the posted 45 MPH to the 25 MPH zone.” When repairs are completed, the speed limit will be returned to 45 MPH.
