2 Tampa students arrested after gun found on campus

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Police say a tip about a gun on campus led to the arrests of two students at Tampa’s Chamberlain High School.

Tampa police spokesman Stephen Hegarty said in a news release Friday that 19-year-old senior Raeqwon McDonald and a 15-year-old freshman were both charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds and disruption of a school function.

The school was placed on a lockdown about 8:55 a.m. Friday. It ended around 12:30 p.m.

Police and school security identified McDonald and found an unloaded handgun in his backpack, along with ammunition. The investigation revealed that the younger student, who is not being identified by The Associated Press because of his age, brought the gun to school.

Jail records say he doesn’t yet have an attorney.
