What’s the Apps? / Salty Angler

By: Dakin Weekley

For “What’s the Apps?” this week I am at the Salty Angler. Located on the corner of Duval and Amelia, the Salty Angler has gigantic windows that offer a great opportunity for people watching and provide a lot of natural lighting.

Firstly striking on the menu is the Salty Angler’s list of eight different Adult Milkshakes. I am told the two most popular are the Island Joy Shake and the Dirty ThinMint Shake, which is likened to drinking a girl scout cookie. Brian, one of the owners, tells me that his favorite is the Tip the Boat Root Beer Float Shake and I take his advice. This shake contains house-made root beer liquor and vanilla bean ice cream, from Pensacola’s own Polar Ice Cream company, blended using an old fashioned milkshake maker. It is ninety-five degrees outside and this frozen, creamy concoction that tastes just like a root beer float is an effective antidote.

From a plethora of tasty looking options on the appetizer menu, I choose three. I order the Nachos with the Thunder Thigh chicken, Spicy Queso Pork Rolls and a beef brisket taco. All of the meats are in-house hickory smoked. The nachos come smothered in Salty Angler’s spicy queso sauce with plenty of smoked chicken thigh, chopped jalapenos, tomatoes and onions. It is a huge platter of nachos that are spicy and cheesy and delicious. The addition of the hickory smoked chicken really adds another flavor depth to these nachos.

The Spicy Queso Pork Rolls are made with the Spicy Queso sauce and hickory smoked pulled pork rolled up in a flour tortilla. Each piece is like a bite-sized pork burrito. The pork is full of flavor and succulent.

The Taco with beef brisket is served covered with shredded cabbage, cheddar and jack cheese. Among everything on my table the brisket is a stand-out. It is tender and has a big smoky flavor. It melts in my mouth and will leave an inevitable psychic scar on my brain that will push me to replicate the experience of eating that brisket over and over ad infinitum. I may need rehab. It might be a “first taste is free, kid” kind of thing.

The Salty Angler distinguishes itself by making a number of things in-house from scratch. Along with being a great place to stop in for a drink, a snack and to watch the street scene out of those amazing windows, they also sell their smoked meats by the pound for events and parties or if you have a couple of days to spare they will smoke your catch.
