No injuries after reported bomb threat in Key Largo

Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Coldwell Banker Commercial Schmitt Real Estate Company, 100430 Overseas Highway, in Key Largo, about 1:30 p.m. Thursday after a bomb threat was reported.

There were no injuries reported, no unusual packages or suspicious people found and no arrests made in the incident.

A worker reported receiving an email in which the author stated that someone walking up would detonate a bomb at the business unless money was paid to the email sender using cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin. The worker reported the email to the Sheriff Office.

Deputies cordoned off and evacuated the building immediately as well as nearby buildings while they searched for anything out of the ordinary. Nothing out of the ordinary was found.

The bomb squad was not called to the scene.

The scene was cleared and deemed safe shortly after 2 p.m.

The specific business was not named in the email and the incident appears similar to a rash of bomb threats that occurred Thursday across the United States, including many in South Florida.

Upper Keys detectives are investigating the incident.
