World AIDS Day Service at the Key West AIDS Memorial; Tree of Hope Returns

The Key West World AIDS Day Service will be held at the AIDS Memorial, at the foot of White Street and the Edward B. Knight Pier, on Thursday December 1 at 5 pm.

The service begins with a candlelight Memorial March from the Key West City Hall down White Street to the Memorial.  Marchers will assemble at 4:30 PM.

The traditional reading of the names of all of those in the AIDS Memorial will be done by a roster of community leaders. Twelve new names will be added to the memorial this year.

The major address will be delivered by Sanaris Peacock. Candles will be given out.

The memorial was expanded with an inspiring design wall by architect Michael Ingram to accommodate more names. There are over 1230 names engraved currently.

Key West was the first United States City to have an AIDS Memorial.

Come out and join your friends in celebrating the lives of loved ones.

Following the service, the Friends of the AIDS Memoria is bringing back, by popular demand, The Tree of Hope.  This event will take place upstairs at La Te Da, 1125 Duval Street.  Participants can donate $20 to the Friends of the AIDS Memorial and receive either a commemorative coin or a tree ornament.  They also get a card to write the name of a loved one lost to AIDS and hang it up on the tree.
