RESCUE TAILS / Woogsley

Contributed by the FKSPCA Staff

When Michael first saw Woogsley she was sitting in a horse stall surrounded by flies and mosquitos quietly lying in the hay. She saw him, and stood up on her short legs and walked towards him happily wagging her tail. Her noticeable underbite was delightfully surprising. Between her protruding bottom canines, her little legs and her small muscular body, Woogsley was quite the sight!

Over the next two months Michael would continue to see Woogsley at the same horse farm, in the same horse stall. Eventually curiosity got the best of him, and he asked an employee what her story was. The employee said that she just showed up one day, most likely one of the many Redlands strays, either dumped, let go or lost. She had no collar, no tag, no microchip and she wasn’t fixed. So, they began feeding her and putting out water, feeling sorry for the stray dog. She stuck around, and eventually moved into a horse stall and became the resident farm dog.

Although life for Woogsley was certainly better, and safer, in the horse stall on the farm than life roaming the streets, Michael still felt that the sweet dog with the adorable underbite deserved a better life. When he inquired about taking the dog home, nobody objected and everyone thought it was best to have the horse stall available for, well, horses.

At the time, there really wasn’t a plan. All Michael knew was he wanted her to have a home, and a family, like any other dog. So Woogsley eagerly jumped into his car and the two of them drove back to his home in Marathon together.

With two dogs of his own, he slowly introduced Woogsley to his beloved pups. She was given toys, perhaps for the first time in her life, and a nice comfy bed. Thankfully his dogs accepted Woogsley into their home, and as she progressed from stray/farm dog to house dog, it was time to get Woogsley all fixed up and ready for adoption!

Michael reached out to our Marathon clinic for help getting Woogsley ready for adoption. Reluctantly, he surrendered Woogsley, whom he had grown to love in such a short time, knowing the right family was out there for her, somewhere. She was spayed, heartworm tested, vaccinated and microchipped. After her surgery, Michael offered to continue fostering Woogsley through her recovery, and until she was adopted.

Woogsley was perhaps one of our quickest adoptions to date. One day after she was featured on our website for adoption, Michael reached out with this: “I’ve thought about this hard and I want to adopt Woogsley. She has bonded with my other pups very well, more than I expected actually. She is a perfect fit here.” We might have had an inkling that Woogsley was meant to be with Michael all along, and we couldn’t be happier about the perfect ending to her Rescue Tail.
