Women Saving Florida’s Environment is Topic at Keys History & Discovery Center

Islamorada, FL – Keys History & Discovery Center Presents…Saving Florida: Women’s Fight for the Environment in the 20thCentury on Wednesday, March 14 at the Keys History & Discovery Center. Doors open at 5 p.m., presentation begins at 6 p.m.

Join Writer and Historian Leslie Kemp Poole as she shares stories from her book, Saving Florida, which reveals how women’s clubs prompted legislation to establish Florida’s first state park, which later became the core of Everglades National Park, in 1916 – before women even had the right to vote. Hear about the many women who led the fight for unprecedented changes in how the Sunshine State reveres its unique natural resources, and about those who set the foundation for this century’s environmental agenda, which came to include the idea of sustainable development. Learn how, as a collective force, they forever altered how others saw women’s roles in society.

Cost for non-Discovery Center members is $25 and includes admission to the museum as well as light appetizers. A cash bar will be available. Reservations are recommended and can be made at 305-922-2237 or [email protected].
