Womankind celebrates National Women’s Health Week with free “Lunch & Learn”— Reserve your spot now
Womankind, a Key West medical center that provides high-quality family planning and primary health care to people of all income levels, honors this year’s National Women’s Health Week with a free “Lunch & Learn” gathering on Thursday, May 17 from 12:00pm – 1:00pm at the center’s 1511 Truman Avenue location. The informal meet-and-greet luncheon encourages the health and well-being of the islands’ women by inviting current and potential patients to learn about their programs, ask questions, and meet their team of supportive, nonjudgmental professionals.
“Woman are often the caretakers of others. But, you can’t give if you are drained from not feeling your best,” says Womankind Executive Director Cali Roberts. “Women’s health should be a top priority and that’s what National Women’s Health Week reminds us.”
This year’s annual National Women’s Health Week kicks off on Mother’s Day, May 13 and is celebrated through May 19, 2018. Led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health, the week serves as a reminder for women to make their health a priority and build positive health habits for life. Which seems simple enough to do, but for many women, isn’t.
“I work in a doctor’s office and still get behind on my appointments,” says Roberts. “There is always something else I need to do, and because I live in Big Pine Key, have a daughter that goes to school and plays sports in Key West, and work in Key West myself, I always seem to be running somewhere.
“I understand how easy it is to ignore preventative care. Until it’s not.”
Preventative care measures, like being tested for STDs, getting cholesterol checked, or having pap smears, mammograms, and colposcopies performed, and early intervention are key to avoiding many potentially serious health conditions. But many don’t have insurance and will put off these important check-ups for a later date that never seems to come.
Fortunately, Womankind has systems in place to help make preventative care an affordable option, offering a sliding scale fee system and accepting most insurances, as well as funding programs that support Florida Keys women and their partners via a Family Planning Program that serves patients ages 13-26 supported by Monroe County Health Department and Sheriff Asset Forfeiture Fund, a Family Planning Program that serves patients ages 26 and up supported by Dogwood Foundation and the Human Service Advisory Board, a Breast Health Program supported by Zonta Key West and Susan G. Komen, and a Colposcopy Assistance Program supported by Klaus/Murphy Foundation.
“We will do everything in our power to make sure you can address your health priorities,” says Roberts.
