Woman arrested for child neglect

A 23-year-old Marathon woman was arrested Sunday after leaving a 3-year-old boy unattended at a residence while she was grocery shopping.

Catarina Tzarax was charged the child neglect without causing bodily harm.

Sgt. Christian Kellenberger and Deputy Anfernee Rodriguez responded to the 1100 block of 74 Street where two witnesses stated they heard a child screaming and saw the child leaning perilously close to a window. Both witnesses stated they feared the child my fall out of the window and called 911. One of the witnesses stated they knocked on the door of the residence and no one answered.

Deputy Rodriguez met with the child’s uncle at the residence who stated he had just arrived home from work. He was unaware the child was in the home alone. Another male present stated he had just returned home from work and he too did not know the child was alone in the room. Sgt. Kellenberger found two additional males in a back room of the house. Both men stated the had just arrived about 10 minutes ago and were unaware there was a child in the residence.

The child’s uncle was told to call the child’s mother, identified as Tzarax. The phone call was made at 5:22 pm. and Tzarax returned at 6 p.m. She arrived and said she left the child alone, because she knew her brother would be arriving home shortly after she had taken leave. When asked why it took so long to return home upon receiving the phone call, Tzarax responded she did not have her own transport.

Tzarax was taken to jail.
