WLRN Public Radio to Launch New Series “Sundial” for South Florida’s Mid-Day Programming

Miami, FL – September 27, 2017 – WLRN Public Radio launches new mid-day program “Sundial” to debut at1 p.m. on Monday, October 2, 2017, and will air Monday through Thursday each week.

A joint initiative of WLRN’s Programming and News departments, this new program will feature news and information of interest to South Floridians, as well as entertaining and informative discussions of the arts, culture, sports, food and dining and more. Listener participation will be a key element of the program and the program will be active on all major social media platforms.

“We are pleased and proud to continue to deliver on WLRN’s long-standing mission to serve our community and tell its stories,” says Peter J. Maerz, WLRN’s director of radio programming. “Sundial will accomplish both with fresh, vibrant content and an outstanding host.”

Popular and engaging WLRN News anchor Luis Hernandez will host the new program, with the support of and participation by WLRN’s award-winning news team.

“We are excited to have Luis host the program,” adds WLRN’s Vice President of News Tom Hudson. “He brings with him a deep and personal understanding of what it means to be a South Floridian. Sundial will be a new opportunity for him to engage on-air and online with newsmakers, the community and the audience.”

Luis Hernandez is an award-winning journalist and host whose career spans three decades in cities across the U.S.  He joined the WLRN newsroom in 2014, and he’s no stranger to life in South Florida.  Luis grew up in Palm Beach County and has spent almost 40 years as a resident of the Sunshine State.  Before arriving at WLRN, Luis spent four years at KNPR in Las Vegas, as the host of the daily talk program, State of Nevada. While there, he worked to increase the stations reach within the Hispanic community. He covered the 2012 presidential election from “Sin City,” as well as environmental issues, immigration policy, and the recovery from the 2008 housing disaster.

WLRN also welcomes “Sundial” consulting senior producer Maeve McGoran to the team.  Maeve is a national award-winning reporter, editor and producer, who spent a number of years as senior editor of NPR’s flagship news program, Morning Edition. Maeve edited daily news and political coverage as well as some of Morning Edition’s most memorable host interviews with musicians, scientists, writers, and filmmakers.  Before joining Morning Edition, she was deputy senior editor of NPR’s Washington Desk, where she oversaw much of the network’s White House, Congressional, and Supreme Court coverage.

Fridays will also feature a new program. The Florida Roundup adds a second hour, co-hosted by WLRN’s Tom Hudson and WJCT, Jacksonville’s Melissa Ross. The program will focus on statewide issues, continuing the format of the noon hour. It debuts at 1pm, Friday, October 6th.

If you are interested in interviewing the “Sundail” host Luis Hernandez, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
