WHERE IN THE WORLD: CADIZ, SPAIN
Travel notes from the tour zone with George Fontana
Cadiz, a peninsular city strategically located on Spain’s Atlantic coast, was a minor port in ancient times. It assumed great importance as the principal port for
explorations of the New World, (Columbus sailed from Cadiz), and later as a repository for the gold and silver from the Americas. Today the Andalusian port attracts tourists eager to explore its Moorish city center with its mosaic tiles and wrought iron gates, visit its magnificent cathedral, and enjoy its seaside ambience. We were there during Semana Santa (Easter Holy Week) to witness the procession of hooded penitents and ornate silver reliquaries.
