Westin Donates Smoke alarms

The Westin Resort has donated 100 smoke alarms to the Key West Fire Department for the Department’s free smoke alarm program with the goal of ensuring every household has a working alarm.

“We want to be sure every member of our community is safe,” said Westin General Manager Diane Schmidt.

“In a fire, seconds count,” said Fire Marshal Alan Averette. “Half of home fire deaths result from fires at night when most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out.”

Smoke alarms cut the chances of dying in a fire in half. The National Fire Protection Association recommends at least one working smoke alarm on every level of a home. One in five homes equipped with smoke alarms are not fire safe because batteries are missing, disconnected or dead.
