Wanted man also charged with drugs
A man wanted on an outstanding warrant was also charged with possessing illegal drugs after a traffic stop Thursday.
Traffic Enforcement Deputy Greg Korzen was at the 18 mile marker watching for speeding vehicles when spotted the green Nissan southbound just before 6 p.m. He recognized the passenger in the car as 28 year old Antwane Anglin of Miami whom he knew to be wanted on an outstanding warrant. The warrant was a Key West Police case carrying charges of aggravated battery and criminal mischief.
Detectives from the Sheriff’s Special Investigations Unit had alerted Deputy Korzen earlier in the day that Anglin might be traveling in the Lower Keys in that particular vehicle.
Deputy Korzen stopped the vehicle on Sugarloaf Boulevard. The detectives arrived on the scene a short time later as backup.
Anglin was arrested on the outstanding warrant. A Sheriff’s Office K-9 team also responded and alerted on the car, indicating the presence of narcotics inside. A search of the car did, indeed, turn up illegal drugs. Detectives found both cocaine and MDMA, known on the street as “Molly”.
Anglin’s girlfriend was driving the vehicle at the time of the stop. She denied knowing about the illegal substances, and Anglin told the detectives the drugs were his and she had nothing to do with them.
Anglin was further charged with possession of cocaine with intent to sell, trafficking in MDMA, possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into jail.
Man arrested for threats with sword
A Big Coppitt Key man was arrested Thursday for making threats to kill his family with a samurai sword.
Deputies responded to a house on Jade Drive at 12:30 p.m. A man called Sheriff’s dispatchers and said his son had a knife and was making threats. When officers arrived, they found 24 year old Dwayne Day II standing in the yard with a sword in his hand, still in its sheath. They were finally able to convince Day to give up the sword and surrender peacefully.
His father, who was also on the scene, said Day had made threats to kill his whole family with a machete.
Day was arrested; he was charged with improper exhibition of a dangerous weapon and he was booked into jail.
