Volunteers Needed / Rip-Off Team Expands Protest, Warns Cruise Passengers

The Key West Rip-Off Rapid Response Team has expanded its six week-long sidewalk picketing against two local cosmetics stores. We are now launching a new initiative to warn cruise-ship passengers about cosmetic shop rip-offs in Key West.

Our group of local volunteers and a few visitors has conducted daily sidewalk protests in front of Oro Gold, 518 Duval Street, since January 11 and more recently at the company’s second location, 24 K Gold, at 407C Front St. Both stores have been cited for city code violations and consumer complaints.

This company’s owners are the worst of the worst for city code violations, consumer complaints and negative online reviews.

With a few more citizen volunteers, we have expanded picketing to both stores and cover more hours at each location. The pickets are effective.

In a new action, we have added a Cruise Ship Passenger Educational Strike Force that engages with cruise-ship visitors.

Many cruise ship visitors are completely unaware of the long history of aggressive sales tactics, code violations, and consumer complaints. We want to warn visitors before they get fleeced in Key West. Large signs warning visitors of cosmetic shop rip-offs are being displayed in high-traffic areas frequented by cruise-ship passengers.

This important consumer advocacy work requires volunteers. They  donate 90 minutes to help picket the shop, help educate the public, and warn the tourist. It is very rewarding work because the vast majority of Key West residents want to end the unethical business practices. Visitors are grateful for the warning!
