Veterans’ Day Weekend Beach Cleanup – Organized by Mote Marine Laboratory High School Interns

SUMMERLAND KEY, Florida Keys – On Saturday, November 9th, from 9-11AM, Mote Marine  Laboratory’s high school interns will host a Veterans’ Day Beach Cleanup at the Key West Nature Preserve! All local students and families are welcome and encouraged to attend. Participants should meet at 9:00 the entrance to the Nature Preserve at 1799 Atlantic Blvd, Key West, FL 33040. Bring closed toe shoes, a water bottle, and sun protection! All other supplies will be provided.

This is a great opportunity for local students to help our oceans. Marine debris is a huge problem, but one that we can all act to reduce. This is important because of the may devastating ways that trash can harm our ocean life! A plastic bag could get on top of a coral and block it from getting sunlight, a sea turtle may mistake a plastic bag for a jellyfish and eat it, or a dolphin could become entangled in old fishing gear. About 4.8-12.7 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year. Come do your part, and help keep our beaches beautiful and our ocean clean!
