USAR Training

Sometimes the fastest way to get a patient out of a burning building is right over the side. This week the Key West Fire Department Urban Search and Rescue team is training for rappelling: learning to use ropes and pulleys to lower people out of harm’s way.

Working from the top floor of the Park N Ride on Caroline Street, they are learning to control the descent of their colleagues and how to safely descend. Another team member plays the role of the patient, giving each firefighter the very real experience of lowering a person down the side of a tall building.
