United States Coast Guard Day

Mayor Teri Johnston and the City Commission proclaimed August 4th as Untied States Coast Guard Day, honoring the 231st birthday of the service.

Initially established as The Revenue Cutter Service in 1790, it served as the nation’s only armed force on the sea until Congress launched the Navy Department eight years later.

The Coast Guard has been operating in Key West protecting the nation’s interests since Key West was designated a Port of Entry into the United States in 1823 even prior to the City’s incorporation in January 1828.

U.S. Coast Guard Lieutenant Stanley Parker served to establish the U. S. Naval Air Station Key West in 1917, serving as the first commanding officer on Trumbo Point.

The Coast Guard has long been an inseparable part of our Key West community,” said Mayor Johnston in the proclamation.

Sector Commander Capt. Adam Chamie accepted the honor along with Deputy Sector Commander Richard Armstong.

Capt. Chamie thanked the commission and the community for continued strong support, as well as support organizations like the Military Affairs Committee and the Navy League.

“I’ve been stationed in many cities throughout the country,” he said, “and there is no finer city for the Coast Guard than Key West.
