“Under the Mayan Stars” to showcase visionary artist Carlo Mejía and his works
On Thursday, March 7, from 6:00-8:00pm, The Studios of Key West, located at 533 Eaton Street in Old Town Key West, invites the public to a “First Thursday” event to meet multi-award winning artist Carlo Mejía, whose exhibition “Under the Mayan Stars” is on display from February 21 through March 21 in the Zabar Lobby Gallery.
Mejía, a Salvadorian exile of Mayan descent whose works have been collected world-wide, creates powerful, symbolic images on porcelain, wood, ingres paper, and other mediums that characterize the ancient Mayan quintessence, evoking the complexities and mysteries of a sophisticated society whose reverence for both the natural and super-natural worlds was vividly expressed in its passion for artistry.
“Mejiá is the last of a breed,” wrote Peter Hastings Falk, Editor and Chief Curator for DiscoveriesInAmericanArt.com, in a recent email. “He’s a descendent of the ancient Mayans and a survivor of genocide. Tutored by shaman elders as a boy, his imagery is unique owing to the significant spiritual role of art in Mayan culture. All of the key superlatives that describe mastery of composition, color, and subject certainly apply but upon closer examination one discovers a complex iconography begging for meanings to be revealed.”
The “Under the Mayan Stars” exhibit and “First Thursday” artist meet & greet reception is sponsored by Keys Wealth Management. There will also be a special invitation-only reception and art sale on February 28, to benefit “Hugh’s View,” The Studio’s rooftop terrace coming next season. The Studios of Key West was established in 2006 and supports the creative community as a multidisciplinary presenter, arts center and artist residency provider. For more information visit tskw.org.
