Two arrested in burglary/sexual assault case

Two Marathon men were arrested early Saturday after they broke into a woman’s home and sexually assaulted her.

Yandri Lopez Macaya, 40, and Yovany Eduardo Veral Lorenzo, 45, both of Marathon, were both charged with sexual assault and burglary with assault or battery.

Deputies responded to the 200 block of 39th Street at approximately 6:30 a.m. regarding a burglary in progress. The female victim ran from the residence to a nearby gas station and asked the clerk to call 911.

Multiple Deputies arrived to find both suspects fighting each other in the victim’s front yard. Lopez Macaya was armed with a bat. Both men were taken into custody.

The 32-year-old victim told Detectives she went to bed at 12 a.m. and suddenly woke up with one of two unknown men on top of her. She stated the two men took turns raping her for approximately 30 minutes while she tried to fight them off. She kicked one of the men, which caused him to fall off the bed and break the floorboard. The victim used the floorboard to strike the other suspect in the face. She eventually was able to run to the gas station for help.

Major Crimes Unit Detective Rosary Ponce noted both suspects had injuries consistent with the victim’s story. Similarly, the residence showed signs of a struggle. There was a broken floorboard in the bedroom. A window was open and a door was pried open, but was still locked — consistent with forced entry.

The clerk at the nearby gas station identified the suspects as two men who attempted to flirt with her roughly an hour prior the victim running into the gas station for help. The clerk stated she was on 41st Street when the men called her “baby girl.” She told Detective Ponce she hurriedly got into her car and drove to the gas station to report for work.

It is unclear what spurred the two suspects to fight each other after the victim fought them off and ran for help.

Both men were taken to jail.
