TROPICAL STORM EMILY NOT EXPECTED TO IMPACT MONROE COUNTY

MONROE COUNTY, FL – Today, Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a State of Emergency for the lower 31 counties of the state, including Monroe County, due to Tropical Storm Emily. There are NO impacts expected for Monroe County, but the state chose the broad geography for expediency in the administrative process, Monroe County Emergency Management Director Martin Senterfitt said.

“Because a State of Emergency is a legal document, the state doesn’t want to have to go back and add counties to it in a piecemeal fashion,” Senterfitt said. “To have such a large area chosen is simply precautionary.”

The National Weather Service Florida Keys’ 8 a.m. advisory today that said Tropical Storm Emily would not impact the Florida Keys.

Here is what the forecast said: “As of 8 a.m., newly upgraded Tropical Storm Emily was centered about 50 miles west-northwest of Sarasota, Florida. Emily is moving toward the east at 8 mph, and has sustained winds up to 45 mph. Emily is a very small-sized tropical storm, and is expected to continue onshore west-central Florida later today, cross the central Florida Peninsula tonight, then turn northeast and move offshore the east-central Florida coast.”

The National Weather Service Florida Keys’ office said no additional Tropical Storm Emily updates would be needed for Monroe County.
