Traffic Stops Yields Kilos of Cocaine

On Saturday, June 27th, the Key West Police Department with the assistance of Homeland Security Agents conducted a traffic stop on a black, four-door Nissan. At first the traffic stop appeared to be routine, however police K-9 alerted to the odor of narcotics in the vehicle. Due to the nervous demeanor of the driver and the positive alert, officers relocated to a secure location to search the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle revealed two hidden compartments. Within those hidden compartments, detectives located approximately 2.6 kilos of powder cocaine. Also located in the vehicle was an AR-15 rifle.

At the time there were three occupants of the vehicle to include a female and a two- month old baby.

The driver, Alexis Baca Martinez, 22, is charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

The female and baby were later released.
