Tix For World Premiere “The Return” Now Available

Tickets for the World Premiere run of “The Return”, the new original play by Key West playwright Bob Bowersox, are now on sale. The show will run November 1-19 at the Red Barn Theatre in Key West as a non-subscription Special Event. Early bird tickets can be had by calling 305-296-9911 or visiting redbarntheatre.com/tickets.

The play centers around David Steele, the venerable anchor for World News Network, who for 35 years has been the most respected voice in television news. But on this particular night, Steele announces live on-air that he is not who he has purported to be all these years, but is actually Jesus Christ, returning because things are so botched up in the world that he could no longer sit on the sidelines and watch it deteriorate further. Needless to say, all hell breaks loose…so to speak.

The play will star Tony Konrath, Tom Murtha, Karl M. Stahl, Melody G. Moore, Vanessa McCaffrey, and Bowersox, who will also direct. His Theatre XP will produce.

“With my mother basically a Fundamentalist and my grandfather a by-the-Good-Book preacher, I grew up in a household immersed in scripture,” Bowersox said. “As I matured, I formed my own beliefs about such things, but I’ve always had this thought in the back of my head – what if Christ returned in a wholly different way than scripture says he will? As a playwright, there was no way I couldn’t explore that premise.”

While “The Return” may delve into such weighty subjects, it does so with Bowersox’s tongue firmly stuck in his cheek. At the initial reading of the play at last July’s Summer Stage, the standing-room-only crowd laughed out loud throughout.

“It’s funny, yeah,” Bowersox said, “but if you think about it, the idea has some serious implications to it. What really would happen? Would David Steele be seen as off his rocker, or would he be taken seriously? How would his colleagues and the world react? How would you?”

Early Bird tickets are $30. The November 1st Opening Night performance is $35, which includes an invitation to the catered after party with the cast and crew. Sandals and sackcloth are optional.
