THREE PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS SCHEDULED REGARDING THE FUTURE OF ROGO/BPAS IN THE FLORIDA KEYS

MONROE COUNTY, FL—The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) is committed to a robust public participation process regarding the state-mandated hurricane evacuation modeling discussions, which will continue through January 2025.

The County has scheduled three public presentations to give the public every opportunity to participate in the process. These will be the same presentations Monroe County Strategic Planner Kimberly Matthews has given to many civic groups during the past few months.

The public presentations will be:

  1. Tuesday, Aug. 27, 5:30-7 p.m. at Marathon Government Center
  2. Thursday, Aug. 29, 5:30-7 p.m. at Murray Nelson Government Center, Key Largo
  3. Wednesday, Sept. 4, directly following the budget hearing at Harvey Government Center, Key West (The budget hearing is scheduled for 5:05 p.m., and at 3 p.m., there will also be an update from Florida Keys utility officials to discuss future infrastructure abilities in regards to ROGO/BPAS allocations.)

Monroe County continues to give a monthly update during regularly scheduled BOCC meetings and is in the process of meeting with nonprofit and civic groups throughout the Florida Keys regarding the Dept. of Commerce’s hurricane evacuation modeling to gauge public opinions on everything that affects evacuation timing and the number of additional ROGO/BPAS allocations, if any, the County and municipalities should request from the State. The hurricane evacuation modeling is based on a Florida Statute requiring that Monroe County residents be able to evacuate the Florida Keys within 24 hours before a storm. Any allocations awarded could be issued over the next 10 to 30 years or at a rate that does not lead to unbalanced growth or additional takings liability.
