Three mariners rescued off Marathon

Three mariners were rescued after a small boat capsized about a half mile offshore off Sombrero Beach Wednesday night as Sheriff’s Office 911 Communications Specialists were able to closely coordinate efforts between Deputies on the ground and the U.S. Coast Guard.

There were no injuries reported. The names of those rescued were not immediately available.

Sheriff’s Office 911 Communications Specialists received a call at approximately 8:30 p.m. from a female stating she was in a boat that swamped/overturned, sending her and two others aboard into the water. Communications Specialists were to obtain GPS coordinates of where the call was coming from and sent that information to patrol Deputies as well as the U.S. Coast Guard. The call was coming from the Oceanside of Sombrero Beach.

Deputies Corbin Hradecky and Jorge Moreno went to the end of Sombrero Beach Road and activated their overhead lights. The caller said she could see the Deputies’ emergency lights. She activated a flashlight that was seen by Deputies onshore.

Those in the water were wearing lifejackets.

A U.S. Coast Guard boat arrived shortly thereafter and rescued all three without incident.

It was later learned the 12-foot dinghy/boat may have been swamped by a larger boat’s wake based on the statements of those rescued.
