Third Annual I Love Stock Island Announces Winners
The First Little Mr & Miss Stock Island was held Saturday at Stock Island Marina Village on the Deluna’s stage. Little Miss Cecelia Sheffer who came in a beautiful dress and conch shell outfit. Cici’s is daughter to Christina Boza and Joey Baird. Little Mr was awarded to Bentley Russell who came in a dapper black suite and polished shoes. Bentley’s dad is Robert Russell. The winners’ will represent Stock Island in the coming year as ambassadors and ride in the numerous Key West parades.
Captain Randy Johnson and the Sandy Cat presented by Sunset Watersports won second Place & Best Dance Party. USCG Station Key West 33′ Special Purpose Craft-Law Enforcement was awarded 3rd Place & Best Donut, Captain Sean Flynn on General Patton’s When And If won Best Schooner Award, Captain Gary Stanyer of Dolphin Safari Charters won Best Santa Award, Captain James Gilleran on the Nauti-Vee presented by 801 Bar won Best Inflatable, Captain Kyle Reeves on Lil Tree presented by Stock Island Marina Village won Most Lights Per Square Foot, Captain Steve Kocis on the FKCC 2 presented by Florida Keys Community College won Best Music, Captain Michael Cotton on SV M’aisling won Best Island Theme and Captain Dan Fermaglich on MISS DIXIE was awarded Best Classic Look.
The first ever Cuban Pig Roast: China Box Challenge produced some excellent pork for judges and attendees to sample and vote for their favorites. The contestants began the roast at 7 am and unveiled succulent, crispy pigs later in the afternoon. El Mocho, located at 5708 Maloney, took home the Grand Champion trophy and ribbon. Chef Richie Rodriguez blend of spices and precise cooking methods helped him win the prize. First place went to Jenny Eppy, sponsored by Paradise Tattoo. Jenny (Yenisey) used her mom’s recipe to wow the judges. Second place was awarded to Chef Jorge Quintana. Jorge will be opening Cayo Hueso Brewing Company next year on Stock Island next to Roostica. Jorge’s pig also won the People’s Choice award.
he first Rooster Run 5k was sponsored by FYT, a new fitness center opening at 5450 MacDonald Avenue on January 3. The race followed a course in and around the waterfronts, neighborhoods and businesses as the participants discovered Stock Island in a whole new way.
Female Overall Winner was Christine Quintana, 32 of Summerland Key and male was 47 year old Brad Makimaa of Key West. Masters Winners were Tracy Beard, 57 from San Marcos CA and Vincent Parent, 53, Sugarloaf Key FL.
The I Love Stock Island Initiative is a not-for-profit (status pending) organization “Dedicated to preserving the cultural history of Stock Island by promoting its healthy future through outreach, marketing and special events to make our community a better place to live, work and play.” The organization operates under the guidance of a board of directors comprised of community members who care about and have a vested interest in improving Stock island.
